The Simplest Way to Set Up Independent Pretend Living at Home
Dramatic play, or pretend play, is one of my favorite activities to set up! The opportunities are truly endless! You can keep it simple by putting out dress up clothes or a full kitchen set.
The simplest way I have found is to buy or build a toddler sized kitchen.
We bought my daughter's kitchen from IKEA and took the leg extenders off. We put them in the microwave so we don't lose them for now since she can't reach it anyway.
On the outside we put pots and pans and little plants also purchased from IKEA. Inside the kitchen we keep her play food and dishes.
Remember, you don't necessarily have to put out everything that comes in a package! Put out two of each dish and a few food options if you want. You can rotate around which kitchen supplies you offer at a time or put the whole activity in storage for awhile. That way it is new and entertaining again later.
It is important to offer toys that are similar to what toddlers see as real life items. Baby dolls, food, dress up clothes, and a doctor's kit are great dramatic play items you can offer your toddler.
